What could be better than 8 straight hours of music for a good cause? What if those 8 hours included electric performances from Aviator and InfinitiRock? This Friday, July 23rd, the Anand brothers (not to be confused with The Allman Brothers, The Avett Brothers, or any other fraternal music group) will be performing at NOLA FEST on Bard College's Campus. Proceeds from the show will benefit the children of Andrew H. Wilson Elementary School in New Orleans.

The festivities begin at 4:00 p.m. and run until midnight on the Campus Quad outside of Campus Center. In addition to Aviator and InfinitiRock, there will be performances from Great Pyranese, StickLips, Cosmopolitan, Emanuel Gears, Marina & The DayTrippers, Red Shift, and Christopher Paul Stelling. Advance ticket holders will also be entered into a drawing for two tickets to the Spiegeltent to see Jackie Hoffman's comedy show.

A low murmur of excitement hung in the air at the Paradise Rock Club, Tuesday night, as the growing crowd awaited their canine friends to take the stage. With the addition of each Dr. Dog disciple, the murmur swelled to a full roar and chants of “Doc-tor Dog! Doc-tor Dog!” sporadically erupted as stage-hands shrouded in black shuffled across the stage. Though the Philadelphia-based quintet has remained quietly below the mainstream’s radar, the crowd’s pre-show energy suggested that this is a band ready to make some noise. It’s no surprise that Dr. Dog can pack a room at the Paradise—their newest release, Shame, Shame, recently topped the College Music Journal’s list of Top 10 College Radio Albums—and Boston is the college-town, after all.

Opening the night were idiosyncratic alt-country rockers, Deer Tick, out of Providence, RI. Frontman John McCauley swaggered on-stage decked out in a red “I’m Not Santa Claus, but you can sit on my lap anyway…” t-shirt, white hipster sunglasses, and a black Boston Red Sox hat—“Just for you, Boston.” McCauley’s gritty drawl sounds like the result of a life lived at the bottom of a barrel of Tennessee whiskey smoking three packs of Marlboro Reds a day. His semi-Southern persona was underlined by the occasional glint of his sliver tooth in the stage light. Deer Tick played an hour-plus set featuring songs from their first two albums, War Elephant and Born on Flag Day, as well as new releases from their upcoming The Black Dirt Sessions.

Deer Tick are far from unknown as illustrated by the crowd’s cheers and sing-alongs throughout the set. Standout tracks included a slowed down rendition of “Ashamed,” which traded acoustic sensibility for arena rock appeal, culminating in show-stopping guitar solo that could have easily been the work of Eddie Van Halen. During “These Old Shoes,” McCauley hilarious pointed to bassist Christopher Dale Ryan and guitarist Ian O’Neil (formerly of Titus Andronicus) while crooning about surviving a plane crash with a “priest and a clown” before shouting, “it was a no-go for this hobo!” O’Neil’s steady vocals complimented McCauley’s coarse voice while his rhythmic guitar often broke into face-melting erratic riffs. Their set ended with an extended drum solo from Dennis Ryan reminiscent of John Bonham’s “Four Sticks.” Expect great things from these guys.

On to the main attraction. Dr. Dog’s neon-orange tape lined instruments glowed in the darkness of the stage as the band jumped into the swirling rhythms of “Stranger,” a song showcasing their ability to match themes of uncertainty with upbeat melodies. Though Dr. Dog’s recordings portray baroque pop sensibilities, their live performance highlighted an explosive yet subtle punk-rock side. Bassist Toby Leaman and lead guitarist Scott McMicken traded lead vocal duties throughout the set creating something of a Lennon-McCartney dynamic one can’t help but draw from the band’s established 60s pop sound. Additionally, guitarist Frank McElroy’s commanding rhythms played perfectly off of McMicken’s bending guitar while Zach Miller’s and Eric Slick’s consistently inventive piano and drum work drove the engine of the band.

The set focused primarily on tracks from 2008’s Fate and the recently released Shame, Shame, though songs from We All Belong periodically found their way into the set. Perhaps the greatest sing-along response from the crowd came during “The Old Days” as McMicken sang the chorus while the stage lights pulsed along to the beat:

Thump, thump, thump,

House gonna fall down.

Chop, chop, chop,

Tree gonna fall down.

Down, down, down,

Down to the bottom.

Songwriting is paramount to Dr. Dog and each new song established an entirely different atmosphere in the tiny Paradise club—from down-home country during “Station” to the finely-tuned energy of “Where’d All the Time Go?” Leaman and McMicken danced back and forth across the stage as McElroy—towering in height over the rest of the band—bounced along with his guitar. Lead vocals aside, the band’s ability to harmonize in the old 60s pop “ooh-wop-bop” fashion succeeds in a paradox of complex simplicity that many other bands simply cannot match. The backing harmonies established an addictive groove that members of the crowd kept singing even after the song had finished. After an hour and a half set that left the crowd begging for more, the band returned for a three song encore that included the autobiographic “Jackie Wants a Black Eye” that featured McMicken’s only acoustic work of the night. By the night’s end, Dr. Dog had left the audience exhausted, glowing, and ready to do it all again.

Interview with Frank McElroy of Dr. Dog

1. Each of you has a nickname beginning with the letter T—Taxi, Teach, Text, Tables, and you’re Thanks. What’s their significance to the band?

They’re not all that significant. It’s just a letter—like a lot of things in Dr. Dog—picked out of thin air. The significance is added to it by the fact that we decided that you needed a “T” name to be in Dr. Dog. It’s setting a feeling that we’re all in it as a team. I mean it really could’ve been any letter, but it was T. There’s no real meaning.

2. When I first heard the band’s name I assumed you guys were a rapper—somewhere between Dr. Dre and Snoop Dogg. Where did the name Dr. Dog come from?

It’s another kind of chance occurrence. There’s not a really good story. One time Toby (Leaman) and Scott (McMicken) were together and Scott had a drawing and crossed out the A and it said Dr. Wing. Drawing with the A crossed out says Dr. Wing. And I think Scott suggested that as a band name. Then Toby said, “How about Dr. Dog?”

3. Who would you say are some of your biggest musical influences and what were you listening to while recording Shame, Shame?

We worked on Shame, Shame so much that I personally didn’t listen to much other music. You get so deep into the process because you’re working on it like 18 hours a day—pretty much every waking moment. You should check out a guy named R. Stevie Moore. He’s had a big influence on Dr. Dog because he’s like the father, grandfather, or forefather of do-it-yourself recording. He’s recorded hundreds of albums in his basement and played all the instruments and he’s out of New Jersey.

4. For the new album, you guys switched labels from Park the Van to Anti-Records and left your home studio in Philadelphia and recorded in New York for the first time. What prompted you to change labels and go in that direction?

We had kind of grown with Park the Van with each record. We were their first release and had introduced them to a few other Philadelphia bands. We got to a point where just the logistics of all of the work that goes into after you’ve made an album—promoting it and pushing it out there—and we kind of moved beyond their reach. So it was kind of a mutual recognition that we needed someone with a broader stretch to push the album.

5. Are there any other acts you would like to work or perform with?

We could do something cool with the Wu-Tang Clan. That would be up there.

6. What’s the dynamic like between Dr. Dog and Deer Tick?

Well, we’re on the whole tour with them. I didn’t know them so much before the tour but usually with most bands we get along pretty well. We get pretty close pretty fast and Deer Tick is no exception. I think they’re great. They work really well with us on this tour because people in the crowds tend to know their songs and get excited to see them. It seems like the crowd is more familiar with them than smaller opening bands. You know, it’s a toss-up because you want to introduce people to new music that you like but in the case of Deer Tick everyone already seems to be hip to them and really enjoy them so it’s great.

7. Have you ever thought about doing a take-away show—sort of like an impromptu recording on the street—like a lot of bands have been doing on La Blogotheque?

Walking around and singing? I’d love to do that. It sounds cool. I haven’t heard of that blog, though. We did a similar thing in California. Some kids came up to us after a show and asked to film us walking down the street singing a song. So I guess we’ve already done it. Youtube Dr. Dog California. It’s a black and white video. It’s one of my favorite.

8. You used to work on The David Letterman Show and then Dr. Dog played there a few years later. What was it like to go from working there behind the scenes to being featured on the show?

I got to see all my old friends. It was an honor and I was real excited. It was surreal. Working there was surreal and then playing there was even more surreal. It was a weird time to leave because it’s my favorite show but Dr. Dog was my favorite band—so it was strange.

9. What’s the next step for Dr. Dog?

We’re going to keep doing what we’re doing. We’re going to play live shows, we’re going to record albums, and we’re playing a lot of festivals this summer.

This Sunday, April 26, founder of Base Trip Records, Conor Loughman, and Base Trip Records' artist, Aviator (Neil Anand), will be speaking at the TEDx BU conference on BU campus.

TED is a nonprofit organization that focuses on conferences to spread worthwhile ideas. TEDxBU is an independently organized TED event, hosted by students at Boston University. The conference is a free event where anyone can gather information about education, communication, leadership, science, and technology.

Conor Loughman will be speaking about Base Trip Records, specifically music and entrepreneurship in the record industry. Aviator will be speaking about thoughtfulness and the hip-hop scene. Be sure to check out our favorite members of Base Trip Records this weekend at one of the greatest idea-spreading events of the year at BU!

Over three hundred people have reserved a spot for this event, but there are still spots to attend the conference. Even if you can’t make it to the event, content will be available online shortly after the event. The event will take place at The College of General Studies (871 Commonwealth Ave) between noon and 5 pm. Speakers will give 45 minute sessions on each topic with a short break. Last time we talked you were thinking about making an artist name change to one more suitable to your growth as a person and artist. Have you made a final decision?

My final decision is my name, Micah. It’s easy and Conor said a really good thing the other night when I actually performed first as Micah. I think it was at chill out and he said, “You know what? Micah really fits you because you don’t need any of the labels or an alias. You just are Micah that’s it. That’s all there is.” I don’t need to define myself as some other name.

What is your new material like? You talked about incorporating personal changes and new experiences into your music. How is that going?

I’m working on a lot of demos right now, but there has been a lot of different music. I like it a lot because I just got a new Mac computer so it’s a lot easier to record demos and actually put the sound to something and be able to tweak it if I want to. Conor is teaching me how to use Pro Tools and we had our first lesson last week. Hopefully we’ll have more. It’ll be really cool to get into that stuff so I know what my voice sounds like and the potential is for that kind of stuff.

Now the music you’re working on, is it similar to your old persona, Rapper Steph, or is it different?

The music is definitely different because I’ve definitely grown in my music and you can tell through the lyrics in my songs. I’ve just gotten a lot more used to be being on the mic and recording myself and knowing exactly what I want different parts of my music to sound like. It’s more experiential so I know exactly what I want to sound like. It’s pretty cool.

Since you’ve been working on new material, have you booked or are you planning future shows?

I just did Jamnesty and tomorrow I’m doing Human Rights Week. I was just on the phone with somebody who works at Hampshire College. I’m doing their Spring Jam which is their second biggest event of the year at Hampshire College in Western Mass. There are four other colleges around there: U Mass Amherst, Amherst, Mount Holyoke and Smith. It’s just a giant day where everybody is outside; it’s like an arts and music festival. It’s also Accepted Students Day so they invite all of their accepted students to their campus. It’s going be a pretty big audience and I’m really pumped about it.

Are you planning on releasing a mix tape any time soon?

I know Aviator took that route and he got a lot of plays. I wouldn’t be opposed to it and I’m working on a lot of stuff that is mix tape quality because it is using borrowed beats from Mos Def and Florence and the Machine. That is a possibility, but I was just planning on releasing those tracks as freebies. I mean a mix tape would be really cool, but right now I’m focusing on putting out an album. We’ll see what happens. If I had the music for it, I would definitely do it. I’ve really been building up the last two and a half years on making an album; an album with original beats and all of that stuff. I’ve never really thought about the idea of a mix tape. It would be really cool, but I need to write a little more music and material, so that would take a little time.

You just signed with Base Trip Records. How did it feel when you finalized it?

I’m going to be honest; it felt kind of scary because I’ve never actually committed myself to anything that’s longer than half a semester or maybe even a semester. I mean it was really cool because it made everything very official. Only time will tell and I’m not going to push time. Time does its own thing. I am not in control of time.

Any new updates in the life of Micah other than what we’ve discussed tonight?

I’m in the process of getting my name legally changed. That’s really rad. It’s going to be Micah Andre. I have to send in all of my petition stuff to the newspaper so they can make it a public notice. Once I do that and bring it to the probate court I’m done; it’s legal. I’m pretty much through the hard part.

Do The Silly Dance

Rob Uslan may be working at a restaurant to pay the bills right now, but it’s the vigorous work he’s putting into his next album that he considers his real job. Supersillyus (Uslan’s stage name) says his next album is taking a direction change. “While the whacky bleep-bloops and psychedelic riffs are still a driving force, there is certainly more of a dance element flowing through my new album,” says Supersillyus. He feels the dance element will make his music more widely appealing.

Supersillyus’ creative flare is not limited to music. He also enjoys drawing and graphic design. His most recent design can be seen on the sleek cover work for Aviator’s mix tape, “Thank You, Come Again” and he’s currently working on album art for InfinitRock’s beat tape.

Although his life is currently chaotic, Supersillyus remains dedicated to connecting and inspiring people through music. He leaves me with these words: “I’ve seen the way music has affected my life and the lives of my peers and if there is any way I can come close to having that kind of effect on another human being, I will spend the rest of my life trying to do so.”

Micah Performs at Spring Jam

Micah will be performing tomorrow, April 17th, at the Hampshire College Spring Jam in Amherst, MA.

The concert will be organized by the Hampshire College Committee on Community Activities.

Micah performs from noon to 12:45 pm in the Main Tent and then again at 5 pm doing a Van Morrison cover set at the Acoustic Pavilion. The festival also features dozens of other artists and performers and ends at 1 am.

The show is primarily for Hampshire College students, but if you can get out out there and support Micah!

Ankur Chaturvedi, childhood friend of Aviator (Neil Anand) and Base Trip Records member, caught up with his buddy for a little Q&A about new material, opening for KiD CuDi, and his general life. Enjoy.

1) Going back to the old days of Aviator, how has your music evolved?

It was all about tightening everything up, word economy, and restraint. I’m trying to say more with less, these days.

2) Are any of the old rhymes still in your work? Or did you choose to get rid of them as you grew as a person?

Sometimes I resurrect an old line or too. As a person, I’m not really one to sit back and reflect on old times for too long. I don’t have boxes of memories and trinkets. Just the same, I don’t listen to my older music because I’m always thinking about the next move.

Sometimes a person will throw on and old song of mine and I’ll listen along. Oftentimes, I’m surprised by the gems I find among the utter dross I was recording as a kid.

3) Were you always about the lyrics, like you are now?

Absolutely. I’m a lyricist. That’s my job and it always has been. My job involves certain essential components – lyrics and content, flow, and performance. Everyday I’m working on one or more of these components. The wheels don’t stop. Even if I wanted them to, they wouldn’t give in. I’m afraid it’s going to be fatal.

4) The typical interview question... at the time, did you think you'd try to rap professionally?

Yes. At age 10 I knew. As I get older I delude myself with games and jobs, socialization and intellectual masturbation, but music has always been my love. It’s as Duke Ellington once said, "music is my mistress and she plays second fiddle to no one."

5) Have Chester's beats affected your style? Or would you say it’s the other way around—seeing as how you're the older brother.

Chester, InfinitiRock, is five years younger than me – making him 18 years old now. He has always been a prodigy. By age 10 he had already mastered “beat-making” and was moving into a different echelon. At this point, I really think he’s just doing it to piss everyone off and shake people up. There are lots of subliminal messages and textures in his music.

Even though I’m older, I find myself consistently humbled by the kid and his work. He has so many songs and so many styles. None of these songs are repetitive, either. That being the case, I’ve been trained by his music to do the same thing. In my mind, he’s paving the way and I’m just chasing along. We both play an equal and integral part to the work, but his music has always affected my style.

6) Do you guys sit together and come up with tracks? Does he make a beat, and you rap on top? Or do you write a rap, and he comes up with a beat to match the flow? How would you describe the work sessions?

Sometimes I sit with him in the studio while he makes songs and sometimes I come up with lines in my head, but more often than not, he comes up with a beat (or a batch of them) and sends it to me online. These serve as the catalyst for my lyrics. If I’m feeling a certain way and I know that lines are packing my head, I will actively seek out of one of his instrumentals, one that matches my mood, and begin to write everything out on top. I try not to leave a song unfinished. After 12 years of writing, I’ve developed certain techniques and habits. Though I’m a relatively easy-going and amiable guy, I’m a perfectionist and an asshole in the studio.

7) Was opening for KiD CuDi at the House of Blues your largest performance so far? Did you get to mention "They Ain't Right" to him?

It was absolutely my largest performance to date. It was a sold out show at the one of the foremost venues in the country. When I stepped out on that stage in front of all 3,000 of those kids, I didn’t say one word for about a minute. I just soaked in their energy. It was palpable. It was humbling. It was terrifying. It was incredible.

I didn’t mention the song to him or chose to play it at the show. I recorded a song over the instrumental of his most popular song, so I think I made the right decision by letting him have his moment. I think it would have been in poor taste if I acted otherwise.

8) How did you feel before the performance? During? Afterward? How would you compare it to the smaller venues you've performed at?

Before, I was petrified. I was pacing around my dressing room. I thought I was going to vomit for hours. During, I was petrified. I turned my head off and let myself get into my zone and put on the best show I could, but I was absolutely petrified by all of those people and the bright lights. It was surreal. Afterwards, I was relieved to be over with it all and I was curious to know how it was from the audience’s perspective (the perfectionist thing).

The smaller venues make you feel big. Everybody is packed like sardines into a basement or hole-in-the wall club. People know your words, they’re in your face, and they’re on level ground with you. At the house of blues, it made me feel gigantic to a point of discomfort. Bigger sardine can, more sardines, elevated stage. Very scary, but I never let them see the whites of my eyes.

9) What's next for Aviator? I hear you're finishing up an album. Can you tell us what it's called? How would you compare it to the mix tape?

So much. The album is on its way. It’s called Bigger Than My Matador. The title is a little ambitious-sounding. It’s basically about being the bull and conquering the matador before he conquers you. After dropping such a feel-good mixtape like "Thank You, Come Again," I think the album might surprise people and might even make them feel uncomfortable. It’s very emotional and raw. There are songs about absolute helplessness, trust lost, and reconciling my precarious position as a “conscious” rapper. There are also really accessible songs on there.

I’m just working on keeping it all together, man. I turn 23 this Monday. I have a new job, a beautiful girlfriend that I adore, and a promising career in music. I just want to keep it this way forever.

18^th birthdays have their perks--the right to vote, buy cigarettes, lottery tickets and porn to name a few. But for New York super-producer, InfinitiRock, this was just the icing on the proverbial birthday cake. After officially signing with Base Trip Records on his birthday, March 12th, InfinitiRock released his debut beat tape, “17Years.” The release features 40 tracks of hip-hop and electronic beats influenced by everything from Hindi instrumentals to European pop.

InfinitiRock’s name reflects his approach to music and tireless work ethic. Since he first began experimenting with beats 12 years ago, InfinitiRock has produced new tracks almost every day. He says that he never takes breaks, which is also why he never puts spaces in his track titles. “I have no time for spaces.”

Music has always been an influential part of InfinitiRock’s life. Growing up in an Indian family, his parents would often play traditional Hindi music around the house. “I didn’t speak or understand Hindi,” he explains, “so the voice was merely an instrumental tool, rather than a lyrical one.”

InfinitiRock is not the only Anand making music. In addition to his solo work, InfinitiRock produces beats for his older brother, Neil—Base Trip Records’ hip-hop artist, Aviator. Their musical collaboration began about 12 years ago when Neil turned to Chester and said, “Let’s make music! I’ll be Atari, you can be Pacman.”

InfinitiRock’s beats back most of Aviator’s raps. The brothers collaborate rather than compete, bouncing sounds off of one another until they find the right mix. “We have separate targets and different ears,” the young producer says. InfinitiRock produced many of the tracks on Aviator’s mix tape, “Thank You, Come Again,” and Aviator’s debut L.P., Bigger Than My Matador, due out later this Spring, will exclusively feature his brother.

Music isn’t the only passion in the young producer’s life. InfinitiRock loves cooking and admits that if he wasn’t a musician, he would be a chef. “I have a similar approach to cooking as I do with instrumentals,” he says. “I add a lot of details to create one dish.” Next year, InfinitiRock will attend SUNY Purchase pursuing a degree in Biology.

The Swedish Invasion

Swedish indie electropop band, Miike Snow, put on one hell of a show this past Wednesday at Boston’s legendary Paradise Rock Club. The band made a silent entrance sporting all black attire and blank white masks, as is their performance signature. The ecstatic crowd cheered as the band approached their positions on stage. Their opening song, “Cult Logic”, captivated the audience into a trance-like bouncing frenzy with its heavy electronic beat and the euphoric, light, lingering voice of Andrew Wyatt. The band revealed their faces during an extended instrumental jam in the middle of their third song, “Black and Blue.” Clocking in just short of an hour, the short-but-sweet show ended with “Animal,” their most energetic and famous song to date.

The band focused entirely on their instruments throughout the course of the show, uttering only: “thank you.” Formed in 2007, Miike Snow consists of front man indie singer/guitarist Andrew Wyatt and production duo Christian “Bloodshy” Karlsson and Pontus “Avant” Winnberg

(best known for their award-winning work on Britney Spears’ “Toxic”). Miike Snow is a worthy listen and a great live show.

Boston University took over the House of Blues Boston on March 20th for the spring "Scarlet Fever" concert. The audience teemed with excitement as local artists, including DJ E-MARCE, Taylor Walker, and Aviator, shared the stage with hip-hop phenomenon KiD CuDi.

Aviator performance included tracks from his new mixtape “Thank You, Come Again” and opened with his signature song, “Tell Me Why.” Avi’s energy was contagious and got the crowd making the two-fingered A in no time. He proved, like the track states, that “the mic looked right in [his] arm.” Avi connected most to the audience with his song “Bring Nick Back,” giving a shout out to “all [his] 90’s kids.” References to “Hey Arnold!” and pogs hit a sweet note for Generation Y as well as the artist himself – the song is an homage to his days growing up with his little brother who provides the infectious beats in the background). Other songs performed included “I Like It” and “Jai Flow,” a tongue-in-cheek allusion to his Indian heritage.

The pairing of Aviator with KiD CuDi was a logical move based on their similarities. Both artists started rapping at a young age. However, CuDi was only a few years older than Aviator when he released his first mix tape in 2008. A year later, he released his first album, “Man on the Moon: The End of Day.” But Aviator isn’t far behind CuDi. Later this Spring, Avi's expected to release his full-length album “Bigger Than My Matador."

Haiti Benefit Festival at BU!

Hey there, boys and girls!

This Sunday, February 28^th, the Haitian Cultural Association and Boston University will host a benefit to support victims of the recent earthquake in Haiti.

The benefit will be held at the George Sherman Union (GSU) between 1-6 p.m. and will feature performances from Base Trip Records’ artists Aviator and Rapper Steph and many more local artists.

All proceeds will be donated to Partners in Health, who have been working in Haiti for more than 20 years.

In addition to live music, attendees can experience various aspects of Haitian culture:

-Catering by local Haitian restaurants.

-A fashion show with pieces inspired by Haiti’s Carnaval festival donated by local designers.-An interactive museum exhibiting a “walk through Haiti’s history.”

-A panel of speakers discussing Haiti’s future in the wake of the earthquake.

-A silent auction with contributions from the Boston Red Sox, David Yurman, artists from Boston University’s College of Fine Arts, and more.

Mayor Thomas Menino will be in attendance and there will be a live webcast with the 82^nd Airborne Commander to Port-au-Prince.

A Minute With Micah

Base Trip Records' own Devondra Dominguez caught up with Micah Domingo (formerly known as Rapper Steph) to see what he has been up to.

How long have you been a part of Base Trip?

I’ve been a part of Base Trip since my sophomore year, so two years now.

What have you done so far with the label?

I can’t even count how many shows I’ve done, but a lot of the shows happened in my junior year. I was going and going; I did shows at least once a week maybe even twice, so that was really a hectic time. I actually went to California this summer to visit Conor and Rob (Supersillyus). Conor and I made some big strides over there and hung out with Rob while he was finishing up his CD. I also went to New York at the beginning of summer before California with the Throwbacks and we just played, gave out CD’s, and rapped for whoever. It was fun. It was a good time.

What material have you been working on?

I’m mostly working on new stuff. I went through a transitional period- a trans period, wow, that’s weird- last semester where I didn’t really work on music, but figured out a lot of emotional and mental stuff. This semester I feel like I’m coming out on a clean slate and I’ve been writing a lot about my experiences, transitioning, and kind of making sense of all the stuff that happened last semester through my music.

What drives you to create more work and who are your musical influences?

A huge musical inspiration for me would have to be Common. I actually had the great fortune of rapping for him. I went to a show at the Palladium to see him. I was right in the front the whole time.This girl I was dating at the time was able to get the bouncer to let me rap for Common. That was actually about a month after I performed at BU Central for my first time ever. I had never performed live ever in front of anyone before September of my sophomore year. So I was facing Common- thinking “Oh my God”- and started rapping for him. After, he was like “Yeah that’s good work, keep working on it. That’s tight.” Just hearing those words, I was in shock.

Besides Common, another huge influence is Mos Def- almost on the same level of inspiration as Common. His music is more head-trippy and you really have to think about it when you’re listening to it. You think “Woah, he’s really saying some deep stuff.” I have also been listening to some indie music like Rilo Kiley. I have been listening to a lot of emotional music – not emo- but like music that puts emotions in such a way that just makes you go “Wow, I feel exactly what you’re feeling”- that kind of stuff.

Do you have plans for upcoming shows?

I have one show that I know of: the Haiti Benefit show at BU. It’s next Sunday, but other than that I don’t have anything planned yet. I played a show at a house party last week and was a success because the cops didn’t come. It was awesome.

Discuss your possible decision to change your name from Rapper Steph to another name.

It’s not really a flip, but it’s kind of like I am entering into a new phase of life. I am taking all of this stuff that I learned from the old me and applying it to myself; it has been really crazy. I’ve had so much mental and emotional growth and I think it definitely shows in my music. Along with that growth, I need to change my name because I no longer am personified by the name Rapper Steph. That’s the old me. It was great and I loved that name and I had that persona, but now it’s time to move on from that and kind of keep going with life with these phases. I am figuring out where I am today and this is a more permanent kind of change. It’s figuring out what my essence is or what describes me. Picking a name is very complicated.

As far as names, I was going for the name Human, but it is taken which is unfortunate. It’s a bummer because I really liked that name and I felt that it fit me really well. Another name I was thinking was Micahphone since a lot of people call me that – it’s a nickname- and it has my name in it. Rapper Steph had my name in it and I would like my name in it. I’m still discussing the name change with Conor, so we’ll see how it goes. Names are always the hardest to choose because you have to have it forever and you have to personify that name.

Allison Francis, long-time friend Base Trip Records artist, has been busy writing, singing, and seeing the world. She just got back from a spontaneous trip to Montreal where she spent her time meeting and singing for new people and “soaking up inspiration from strangers, magic, and dreams.” A product of this trip is a 45-second song called “Lemon”, which she posted on the internet just a few days ago.

Another new song that Allison recently wrote and that you can listen to is called “No One Could Find Me.”

Want to hear her music some place other than the internet? Well then make sure you see Allison’s upcoming live performance at the Midway Café in Jamaica Plains on March 4^th. The show starts at 8:30 PM and she is playing alongside some talented acts such as her good friends Erica Russo and Grace Hoffman.

As far as new life experiences go, Allison claims that she is “morphing. Maybe sprouting a tail? Not sure what that means yet.” We’ll be sure to keep you posted.

Hey everyone,

I thought I'd let you guys know about the new music that I've been working on this summer. My good friend Issac Hasselkorn and I are currently recording an album together, and we're calling the project Sun Cut Flat. We've been going for a consistent sound, and so far we're very proud of what we've been able to record. I would describe the songs as heavily layered and very dense; its basically an album for headphones. We are halfway done, so it should be finished sometime in the fall. We're going to play a lot of shows once we put the album out, so check back for news and updates!

PS: Allison Francis is rumored to be making an epic guest appearance on the album, but this is yet to be confirmed

Greetings, friends! I hope you're enjoying your summer, playing kickball, taking naps, and licking runaway ice cream off your arms and the arms of your loved ones. I'm gearing up for a hometown show in New York City! For anyone in the area, I'll be playing a 45-minute set at Arlene's Grocery on the Lower East Side on Sunday, July 26th. The set starts at 8:00 and if you tell them you came to see me, I get paid part of the price of your ticket! Yay! I promise a rollicking good time (I've been practicing my banter...)

The ball is rolling! The Throwbacks had a studio session from 1-5 AM this Friday (ughh), and Rapper Steph recorded from 4-7 PM last night (Saturday). We took some pretty sweet footage and will be posting it up here soon, but until it's ready, this is about the closest I can get to simulating the energy and the atmosphere of these two sessions.

Hello world! We at Base Trip Records would like to congratulate our friend and artistic collaborator Margaret Hardy for earning TWO entries into the prestigious Society of Illustrators Student Competition. Only about 125 pieces are selected out of a pool of thousands, so this is a true testament to her talent.

Margaret is a student at The Columbus College of Art and Design in Columbus, Ohio. She is currently helping us to create wicked cool posters and T-shirt designs. She is also very kind. We are honored to work with such a wonderful, creative person.

On May 8th she'll be heading down to New York for the official judging.

My friend Marcus recently told me I should get a Twitter account for Base Trip Records. Like most people, I was skeptical at first. However, after a thorough explanation, he convinced me that Twitter was a really interesting website and had incredible potential as a tool for connecting people together. I am just starting to get the hang of it and I am already finding it really useful and having a lot of fun. If you haven't already, you should probably look into it.

Nostalgia (First Release)

Not many people know this, but the first "official" Base Trip Records release essentially consisted of us handing out 100 copies of our home-recorded sampler CD for free at Splash, Boston University's student activities expo for freshmen.

Every single CD we burned was placed in a unique, elaborately decorated brown paper lunch bag that included: the name Base Trip Records, the track listing, our myspace link, and a Dum Dum lollipop.

This is the absolute first album we ever gave away (notice the #1 at the bottom). My incredibly cool and artistic sister Anne decorated it. (You can't see this, but on the inside, our myspace link is coming out of a genie's lamp).

Huzzah! Our good friend Chilly Willy, (he went to senior prom with Allison Francis!) is a bona-fide master of the art of mash-ups and he has offered to let us give away some of his sweet tracks for free to the Base Trip Records family. I have yet to meet a person who hasn't enjoyed this album. He mashed up Joanna Newsom and ODB. That's all I have to say about that. Download the album here!

We here at Base Trip Records consider ourselves very fortunate to be friends with Jon Towle, the genius behind Apollo Fotografie. Jon has done a number of shoots for us, and every single one has resulted in mind-blowing photographs that are incredibly vibrant and overwhelmingly full of life and color. He is scary talented and he absolutely loves what he's doing, and it's obvious once you see his work.

Jon is spending his final semester at BU doing an internship program in Los Angeles and he intends to stay there after he graduates. While we are sad that we might not be seeing him for a while, we believe that he is going to be wildly successful and we just want say thank you and recognize him for all his time, energy, and vision.

Rapper Steph Backstage Performance-Knitting Factory

When Base Trip Records ventured down to New York City in October, we stuck a fuggin flag in it. For example, we completely commandeered the VIP room backstage at The Knitting Factory and made it our own personal playground. Rob Uslan (aka SuperSillyus) noodled and riffed his little heart out, Allison Francis led a 90's mashup singalong, and our good friend in New York, John Flor, played us a song about Britney Spears.

Here's what Rapper Steph did. (The beat and the guitar part are completely improvised)

CMJ likes Base Trip Records!

We here at Base Trip Records have been slacking on our blog game. Big time. Today, however, we are turning over a new leaf. In the next few weeks we will post up all the important stuff that have happened to us since we started this endeavor, and, after that, this bitch is going to be current, clever, and awesome.

One of the biggest honors our company has received in its short lifespan was to be included in a College Music Journal (CMJ) feature about Student-Run Record Labels. (For those of you who don't know, CMJ is THE authority on college music and a great company to boot).

We blushed like schoolgirls when we were asked to be part of this story and we are incredibly honored to be listed in the company of these other great labels.
